Love your Coffee? Here’s how you can Love your Smile, Too!
- Posted on: Oct 15 2016
Every morning, millions and millions of flavorful beans are steamed into pots of coffee around the world. The fact that there are so many varieties of coffee, and a coffee shop on just about every corner of the nation, is a testament to the fact that there are a lot of coffee lovers out there! At the same time, there are plenty of people who will tell you that you shouldn’t drink coffee. Mainly, this is because of what each sip can do to your teeth.
Coffee can be Bad for your Smile
It’s true. There are consequences of a daily coffee habit. There are benefits, too, though. Recent research is pointing to several benefits that stem from this beverage. For instance, there is evidence that coffee can actually help you avoid diabetes and liver problems. But back to the teeth. To date, there has been no indication that coffee will do anything but harm the oral environment.
Give it up? Say it Ain’t So!
Before you fall into the idea that we are about to tell you that you need to give up your beloved beverage, take a breath. Take a sip, even! We wouldn’t dream of saying that a person should avoid coffee altogether, especially when we understand the idea behind the saying “coffee first, talk second.” That being said, there are measures that we advise you to take as you continue your love affair with this deep, dark drink.
- Rinse, don’t brush. After a cup of coffee, and even during, there is immense value in rinsing some fresh water over teeth. Water dilutes. What it dilutes in this situation are tannins. Tannins are the ingredient in coffee (and red wine) that stain teeth. You get a green light to brush an hour after your cup o’ Joe.
- Make it creamy. Adding cream to your coffee may feel overly-indulgent, what with the fear of fat in America. However, research says that tannins bind with the casein in full-dairy (not a non-dairy creamer), which can save teeth at least some of the staining that could occur.
- There are several other tips that have circulated to ward off the hazards of coffee. We wouldn’t dream of sipping this steamy beverage through a straw, though, so won’t tell you to do so! Also, consuming crunchy fruits or veggies along with coffee A- doesn’t sound appetizing and B- could abrade fragile enamel!
